Why AI Harms Your Language Learning

Guys, before I start with this article, let me say this: I love tech. However, I am also a non-BS girl. Most students who praise AI, are fooling themselves. It is time to wake up. If you're looking for a shortcut, by using AI, you will make the journey much, much longer. Additionally, you will lose the ability to learn and—even worse—the motivation to let your brain find a way to figure things out. The latter is what creates long-term memory.

If you do not feel like reading this article, you can also watch the video I made about the AI challenge.

Okay, granted, ChatGPT speaks very well German, Spanish and English, but the language model completely sucks when it comes to Hebrew, whether it is the accent or the (non-)understanding of Hebrew verbs. Need an example? Watch my video on Hebrew verbs and ChatGPT here.

Available AI Tools for Language Learning and How They Create an Illusion of Progress

AI tools like Duolingo, Babbel, and Mondly have become popular for language learning. These apps use advanced algorithms to personalize lessons, provide instant feedback, and adapt to the learner’s pace. While these features seem beneficial, they can create a false sense of achievement. Learners might feel they are making significant progress because they complete levels and receive rewards, but this doesn’t always translate to real-world language proficiency.

You Don't Know What You Don't Know

AI may be able to tailor your learning, but this requires the tool to study you. Do you believe you understand how to plan your study and make reasonable goals? Are these objectives important to your progress? Could you coach yourself?

How the Use of AI Makes Us Lose Our Ability to Learn by Figuring Out Things

Relying on AI tools can diminish our problem-solving skills. Traditional language learning involves figuring out grammar rules, understanding context, and practicing conversation. AI tools often provide answers and corrections instantly, which can prevent learners from engaging deeply with the material and developing critical thinking skills4. This reliance on AI can lead to a superficial understanding of the language, rather than a thorough grasp.

Successful Methods of Language Learning Before AI Emerged

Before AI, language learning was more immersive and interactive. Methods like immersion, where learners are surrounded by the language in real-life situations, were highly effective. Classroom settings with direct interaction with teachers and peers also played a crucial role. Techniques such as flashcards, language exchange partnerships, and consistent practice through reading, writing, and speaking were fundamental. These methods required active participation and critical thinking, leading to a deeper understanding and retention of the language.

By understanding the limitations of AI tools and incorporating traditional methods, learners can achieve a more balanced and effective language learning experience.
